History story that should be known about the Belmont MCC & the bloke that gave N . S . W . TRUE Moto Cross & made lots of motorcycle dealers rich in this state The name of the Thornton Family is No1 the true leaders in NSW for the creation of Moto cross as our state had a law that said all motor cycle racing was to be done behind wooden fences & a spectator safety wire fence behind that fence , the Law was the Speedway Act enforced on all promoters . This act meant that permanently fenced circuits had to be on land acquired by clubs or organisations for racing legally with public to come & pay to watch . Ken Thornton the Belmont club President & his family led a crusade to repeal the speedway act so we could race our dirt bikes on land that owners would let us use several times a year for TRUE natural terrain Motocross , circuits with rope fences that could be taken down after each event & re erected at the next property , Ken had arranged with land owners to use their properties for a fee we were both happy with . Ken got Dunlop Lee , Foster Park ,, Wirragulla , & others tracks licenced for MX after unbelieve able personal hours badgering the States Chief Sectary till he instructed the local police commander to handel it , to our delight he was a keen motorcycle rider too look into this on going pests request for a law change to the speedway act . The inspector gave foster park a tick of approval after personally walking the proposed track with us pointing out where we could have spectators & where we had to exclude the public telling us he would be attending our first meeting in person & he loved this new idea so the LAW was changed . All this time KT Thornton was working in his VW repair business at Aero Pelican & doing aircraft servicing & Maintenance for which he is very highly qualified trying to make a living As a member of Belmont MCC our leader Ken set a standard for us to follow & he infected us all to get involved in our sport & the cause spread through the ranks like wildfire so finding jobs on working bee days for willing hands was just as much fun as riding the events , it was all for our own good .
