From the Publisher PHOTO: TOM MARTINELLI T wo of the main reasons I travel by train—convenience, and avoiding highway traffic and airport hassles. Taking the train directly to the New York State Fair stop in Syracuse last summer, I discovered firsthand how Amtrak can be the preferred way to travel. Boarding a morning train in Poughkeepsie allowed me to arrive early afternoon at a special platform that operates only during the 12 days of the Fair each year. The journey provided majestic views along the Hudson River, free Wi-Fi, friendly conversation, and freedom to roam around the train. Without a four-hour car ride, I was relaxed and ready for a day of fun. “Amtrak Train Days” was a nice way to start my adventure and learn more about the Amtrak travel experience. Some of my Fair favorites included a delicious Gianelli sausage sandwich, the Taste NY tent, sand sculptures and live music. Our 13th annual issue of New York By Rail provides an abundance of getaway ideas to create a lasting memory on board an Amtrak train. “What’s New, Nearby and Not to Miss” and “Fun 101” provide this year’s suggestions reachable by Amtrak across New York State, eastern Vermont and Canada. Don’t miss the Dome Car article, and get ready for one of the best ways to experience the fall foliage season. Connections is expanded this year to not only contain “Rail/Drive Getaway Itineraries” but allinclusive Amtrak packages that can only be booked through our partner, AKIBA Travel. Based upon popular theme-oriented getaways—such as history, culture, food, wine, craft beverages and more—they are a great way to experience New York State with a rental car, or with a knowledgeable tour operator guiding you. Our website contains the full list of itineraries and packages, so be sure to check them out throughout the year. Whatever your preference, get onboard and experience Amtrak. As always, please remember to share your favorite Amtrak experiences with us by posting on New York By Rail’s Facebook or Twitter pages, or by sending us an e-mail. Enjoy the journey!
