Flavors of Central
New York

n central New York, a day on the farm is an experience for the whole
family. Farm stands, farmer’s markets, and U-pick farms provide a local
source for fresh produce, as well as a firsthand look at where our food
comes from.
What’s good when? Strawberries in the spring, peaches in the summer,
apples and pumpkins in the fall, along with a wide variety of other organic
fruits and vegetables. Visiting one of these farms, however, means more
than just buying a bushel of apples.
Farm markets often offer the delicious bounty of on-site bakeries, and
you’ll probably smell the apple cider donuts the minute you walk in. You’ll
see shelves stocked with locally-made cheese, honey, maple syrup, jams and
other condiments. Others have nurseries and greenhouses, so you can get
what you need for your own garden.
A great time to visit is in the fall, when many farms become “agritourism”
attractions offering corn mazes, hay rides, petting zoos, cider-making
demonstrations, and more.
