Adam Schlesinger
October 31, 1967 - April 1, 2020
Millions knew Adam Schlesinger
from his Academy Award nomi-
nated song “That Thing You Do”
and the Fountains of Wayne hit
“Stacey’s Mom,” but the former
Montclair native who passed away
on April 1st from complications of
COVID-19 had a career that was
far greater and held promise of
much more to come. He was just
52 years old.
Schlesinger’s songwriting was
found in theatre where he co-
wrote the songs for the theater
adaptation of Cry-Baby for which
he received two Tony nominations
along with David Javerbaum. He
also co-wrote the closing song
NJ STAGE - ISSUE 70
“I Have Faith In You” with David
Javerbaum in An Act Of God. His
latest work was a collaboration
with Sarah Silverman on the musi-
cal The Bedwetter, which was set
to begin previews in May.
Some of his greatest successes
came from television where he
won three Emmy Awards and com-
posed theme music, songs, and
scores to numerous shows includ-
ing My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and A
Colbert Christmas: The Greatest
Gift of All! His work in television
included songs for multiple Tony
and Emmy Award shows, which
were sung by some of the biggest
stars in the business.
