In recent years there has been
much talk among the cultural
commentariat regarding the need
for onscreen diversity. Of course
everyone should be able to see
themselves represented in mov-
ies, whether that be by a reflection

but it’s important not to lose sight
of the fact that artists don’t need
to share your own specific cultural
attributes in order to speak di-
