recognition and more awards for
their wines because those are the
types of wines that tend to be
recognized by Wine Spectator and
the rating agencies.”
With a slogan that reads “a snob-
free taste of NJ wine” it is no
surprise that Mullen questions that
approach a little.
“As far as I’m concerned, you
could be a serious wine drinker
and love wine and not like those
grapes,” he added. “I don’t think
we should tell people what wines
they should drink. You drink what
you like just like you eat what you
like. But I do understand what
some of the folks are saying just
by trying to change the perception
of New Jersey wines.”
Speaking of wine critics, Mullen
compares them to film critics
in that if you read the wine
magazines or blogs, you can
quickly learn which ones you tend
to agree with or not. He’s keeping
his eye out for the reviews of some
of his favorite locals to take off in
