We spent a great deal of time meeting and interviewing ordinary South Africans about investment terminology. The results were often hilarious. Above we have Rea (24, works for a soft drinks distributor) and his girlfriend Tsego (25, project manager at a bank). I learned from Rea that the slang for girls is “stock” (I don’t speak that slang) and Tsego told me that a market is a place where they sell things. So in essence, to them, the stock market is a place where girls are sold… um. The stock market is not a place where girls are sold #BringBackOurGirls. This is where the shares of a company (stock) are sold to raise capital. So companies that need money to grow their businesses sell a tiny piece of their company (for money) to the public (me and you).
Below we have Aimee (left, Seed Engine) and Danny (right, Founder of Daily Homes) . They were so awesome. They helped us describe the Bulls and the Bears. Bull Market - Good conditions in the stock market, there's a lot of growth and optimism. Bear Market - Bad conditions in the stock market, there's not a lot of growth and pessimism. A Typical bear market would be the credit crisis of 2008.
