INTELLECTUAL OF THE CHURCH
The intellectual of the church, we are taught, is that when a man reads the Word, and
carefully compares one passage with another, he perceives thence what is to be believed and
done. It exists with those only who are enlightened, that is, who desire to know truths only
for the sake of life and use. Thus the term should not be confused with what is usually called
intellectualism; the emphasis here is on the search for truth as the means to the good of life.
