INTELLECTUAL OF THE CHURCH The intellectual of the church, we are taught, is that when a man reads the Word, and carefully compares one passage with another, he perceives thence what is to be believed and done. It exists with those only who are enlightened, that is, who desire to know truths only for the sake of life and use. Thus the term should not be confused with what is usually called intellectualism; the emphasis here is on the search for truth as the means to the good of life. (See Arcana Coelestia 6222.) 135
