Boynton Beach Retreat - 2014 Robert Brickman, Director A t its annual meeting in May the Boynton Beach Society in Florida voted to change the name of its popular January event – from Eldergarten to Boynton Beach Retreat. There are two reasons for the change. The first is an effort to attract younger people. The second is a desire to identify the event with the Boynton Beach Society in hopes of attracting more young people to visit and consider moving to the area. The new e-mail address is: [email protected]. It will take time to transfer addresses from the old Eldergarten account so both e-mail addresses will remain open for a while. The final report for the 2013 program showed a net of $50 over expenses, plus several hundred dollars in on-site contributions. This money will be used for improvements, such as the sound system at the banquet venue. The staff will also be implementing several cost-neutral suggestions, such as adding a hymn or two to morning worship services, and improving driving instructions to the banquet site. Many have said it would be impossible to match the great lineup of speakers for 2013. We think we have. Featured in the 2014 program – January 19-23 – will be: The Rev. Dr. Jonathan S. Rose, series editor for the New Century Edition of the Writings. Jonathan has been requested as a speaker for several years. Dr. Wendy Closterman, a popular professor from Bryn Athyn College, who specializes in Greek history. Dr. Jim de Maine, a retired pulmonologist from the Seattle area. (Many will remember his May/June 2011 article in New Church Life on end-of-life issues.) Dr. Kristin King, President of Bryn Athyn College of the New Church, will be the banquet speaker. Rates for the Duncan Center, where all sessions are held, will remain the same. Registration fees are $200 on or before October 15, and $225 thereafter. This includes morning snacks and lunch each day. The daily room rate for people staying at the Duncan Center will be $43 per person, double occupancy. Registration forms will be available soon.
