We offer sincere sympathy to the families of all members, former members and supporters of
NBRFC whose deaths occurred during the past year.
Dr. Hugh Burry
We were all saddened to hear of the sudden passing of our beloved patron, Hugh Burry in
June.
Hugh was an amazing man and a wonderful ambassador for our club. We are proud that he
chose to be part of our club and community.
Hugh was a player for our senior team from 1957 and had been a Canterbury player since
1954. He became an icon of the club in 1960 when he became our very first All Black.
Hugh was also a fine doctor and his profession took him to London, Melbourne and
Wellington, but he still kept playing rugby!
As our patron, Hugh was heavily involved – attending meetings, helping out wherever he
could. His efforts on the BBQ on junior club days will always be remembered and he was
always available to help at our golf fundraising tournaments.
He had great mana as an All Black, but his personality was such that he related to all
members of the club, both young and old. We all loved his stories and his warm, gentle
nature.
