meaningful ways. Grade 2 had
a unit of inquiry named Sharing
the Planet which unit focused
on ways of conserving the
environment and limiting the
impact people have on
the environment.

THE
PLANET
WITH
GRADE 2
“At the beginning of the unit,
a lot of the students saw the
environment as something far
away, like the forest,” recalls
Kacey Molloy, elementary
school PYP Coordinator.
Throughout the unit, students
explored a lot of problems
happening on the planet in
general, and they looked at
our community. They made
personal choices on which
problems they wanted to
focus on and solve. Among the
environmental issues that the
students chose were the use
of plastics on campus, waste

group projects to improve
the environmental issues they
identified at ICS.
“The unit made the students
more aware and brought them
closer to the environment,”
adds Ms. Molloy. While a group
named Nature Ninjas decided
to go around campus to collect
and put trash in the trash cans
around campus, another group
decided to sign a petition to
limit plastic use at ICS, and
they formally submitted the
petition to the ICS Head of
School, Dr. Tim Stuart.
Yet another student decided
to start a Gardening Club to
develop a student-led garden
within ICS. The group’s request
to start a garden within
the campus to grow some
vegetables has been approved
by the ICS leadership. Nevaeh,
founder of the Gardening Club
explains, “We plan to start the
garden with vegetables that do
not take long to grow, and later
on we will try bigger plants
like pineapples.”
