Nevada County……A Horse Lover’s Paradise!
Growing up in Santa Cruz County on the farm I fantasized about having a horse; I dreamt of riding across the fields and hills, across the beach and into the salty water on a golden palomino gelding with flaxen main and tail named “Moondow”.
At the tender age of 24 I managed to get my first horse, KC, and off I went down the trails and to the beach, but I soon found that affording the horse lifestyle in Santa Cruz County was very difficult and so I headed to the foothills where it was much easier to afford horse property and trail access was plentiful. I found that Nevada County offered an idyllic, horse friendly lifestyle.
I joined Nevada County Horsemen and learned how to team pen, participated in Gymkhanas and schooling shows. Nevada County is a family friendly horse environment so my kids joined in the fun also. The easy access to wonderful trails at Spenceville Wildlife reserve, the Pony Express routes in Nevada City, Empire Mine and access to color coded trail maps on the Gold Country Trails website made it possible to ride most every day. We settled in an area where I could ride off the property and out onto the trail, plus the kids could ride their dirt bikes, this would never have been affordable in the Bay Area.
Nevada County and surrounding areas in the Foothills offer an ideal lifestyle for most any riding discipline with wonderful training and lessons available for beginners and every other level in English and Western Horsemanship plus Driving; clinics for many great trainers from all over are hosted here; there are trail clubs to participate in; Rodeo Associations and even High School Rodeo competitions. Trail riders will enjoy access to water to swim with their steed as well as a huge variety of elevations and difficulty levels to choose from, even access to the famous Tevis Cup Trail nearby.
Excellent farriers and veterinarians as well as massage, acupuncture and even aqua therapy are available for equines along with affordable property in the area making this a great place to bring your horse, your family and your dreams of equestrian living.
