Especially worth a visit is Back Porch Market in Grass Valley. Here are found an array of imported items. For a picnic, check out the gourmet sandwiches, cured meats, cheeses and bread. The hand made ice cream sandwiches are phenomonal! In the heart of downtown Grass Valley Olive Vitality, an olive oil and vinega r tasting room features a large selection of extra virgin olive oils, fused and infused olive oils, and a tempting variety of balsamic vinegars. Across the street is Lazy Dog Chocolateria & Ice Cream Parlor, a whimsical spot for anyone with a sweet tooth. They feature homemade ice cream products, including ice cream bars, popular with locals. And, check out their line of chocolates. Treats in Nevada City also has a loyal following for their artisan ice cream and sorbet. Check out the seasonal ice creams they make. For a more adult experience, head to Cirino’s at Main Street in Grass Valley. In the bar, you will be able to sample and purchase Jerry Cirino’s legendary Bloody Mary Mix. His recipe has been a Nevada County tradition for 30 years. New on the food scene in Nevada City is the Wheyward Girl Creamery, an artisanal cheese shop. Using locally sourced ingredients, they will produce and sell a selection of cheeses. Also available will be cheeses imported from around the world. In Grass Valley, another new business is La Gastronomia, a food store and deli specializing in seasonal, fresh Italian inspired food. Born in Italy, the owners can credit their grandmothers for much of their inspiration. For family food adventures, get out in the country. For example, take a short scenic drive from Grass Valley to the Happy Apple Kitchen at the Donner Fruit Trail Ranch.
