New in Town?
I
T CAN BE DIFFICULT GETTING INVOLVED
in a new community, so leaf through the
pages of the Nevada County Gold for
ideas. You can take a land trust hike, join a
garden or car club, become involved with an
arts organization, take a course at Sierra
College, or volunteer to be a state park
docent.
An organization that benefits the community is the Friends of the Nevada County
Libraries, a non-profit dedicated to supporting and improving library services. One
way they raise funds is through monthly
sales of previously owned books. ncfol.org
The Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital
Foundation (530-477-9700) sponsors some
popular yearly events including Starry,
Rotarians from the Nevada City
49er Club volunteer at the Barbara
Schmidt Millar Triathlon.
Starry Nights held at the Empire Mine State
Historic Park. Guests dressed in white enjoy
an elegant dinner, fine wines, dancing and
star gazing.
Also on the SNMH Foundation’s event
schedule is the Barbara Schmidt Millar
Celebration of Life Women’s Triathlon at
Scott’s Flat Lake. Both individuals and teams
compete, and there is also a fun run/walk.
Funds raised support breast cancer screening
and scholarships for young women interested in medicine.
Learn more about the area’s colorful history by visiting the Nevada County Historical
Society Web site where you will find information on membership and monthly programs featuring informative speakers and
volunteer opportunities at the society’s
three museums and research library.
