Drawing on longtime interests, he joined the Gold Country Fly Fishers and continues to be engaged in the sport. A Rotarian since his twenties, Wilson became an active member of the Nevada City 49er Rotary Club, which led to involvement with a foundation that provides support for a school in Papua New Guinea. Wilson has played baseball pretty much his whole adult life, and so it was natural for him to also become involved with the local Senior Softball League, which not only provides exercise but comradery. Seniors do a lot! Sixty-nine-year-old Howard Wilson and his wife moved to Nevada County 11 years ago. Although he was still working half-time and commuting to southern California, retirement was on the horizon. Although they already participated in a lot of outdoor activities, she started jogging to get in better shape. Hurrell heard about a jogging course, which led to a fun run. Since she was in shape, she kept running and competing. She discovered there were lots of weekend races for her to run. As Hurrell neared her 50s, she thought she might do a marathon and has done six “so far,” including races in New Zealand and Victoria, Canada. When her husband retired 27 years ago, they moved to Nevada County, and Hurrell kept on running. Currently she is a member of the Sierra Trail Blazers running club and on the Trkac Racing Team. In her early 80s, she consistently wins in her age group and has set some records along the way. As for the future, Hurrell says she will run as long as she enjoys it. After a pretty extensive search, Nevada County won out as a place for Glenn Orren and his wife to retire. That was 15 years ago, and it didn’t take long before he found a volunteer opportunity that continues to this day.
