Opportunities for Entrepreneurs And Start-Ups
WAYDE CARROLL
A
S ELSEWHERE IN THE COUNTRY,
there have been some tough economic times in Nevada County, but
the entrepreneurial spirit that flourished
during the Gold Rush days is still very
much alive.
Western Nevada County is fortunate to
have a technology company history that
dates back to 1959 with formation of Grass
Valley Group, more recently known as
Grass Valley. Acquired by Belden, Inc. in the
spring of 2014, it is an important supplier
of video equipment primarily for the broadcast industry.
There are a number of local companies
that have been started by former Grass
Valley employees. Also, the area is home to
a diverse group of companies that manufacture everything from environmental systems
to medical equipment and precision glass
products.
Existing local businesses looking to grow
and entrepreneurs thinking of creating a
business can turn to the Nevada County
Economic Resource Council (ERC) for help.
The ERC is also working to attract additional
high-tech companies to the area.
At the other end of the county, the
Truckee economy is visitor-based and seasonal in nature. There is not a great deal of
manufacturing, although there is some light
industry. The largest areas of employment
include government, schools and the hospital, as well as service industries geared to
the needs of tourists.
In early 2014, the Truckee Town Council
approved new economic development
incentive programs to help foster a healthy
year around economy.
