Reinhard Paulsen (*1947)
completed university studies in history
(1967-1974) with a Magister Artium de-
gree (1974). He then left the academic mi-
lieu for an apprenticeship as a machine fitter and worked as a factory
mechanic at an aluminium smelter. In 1977 he began employment at
a globally active German corporation in the chemical industry. Until
his retirement in 2012 he was engaged in skilled technical work, en-
gineering and quality assurance. During these years he was critically
committed to his Trade Union, active as a shop steward and member
of the Works Council and for Union adult education. He returned to
university in 2002 parallel to his company employment. In 2006 he
started a doctoral project on European medieval shipping at the Uni-
versity of Hamburg, Department of Humanities which he finished in
2014 awarding him a Ph.D. in History (Medieval Studies). He was also
a guest lecturer in 2013/2014.
