Essential considerations when
connecting a business to the
Internet of Things
Many businesses today dream of knowing everything that's
taking place within its four walls at any given moment. And
being able to predict the future is no longer the preserve of
sci-fi movies – it’s all now possible thanks to IoT. Be that as it
may, creating a successful business model with IoT requires
the firm to manage a great deal of complexity throughout
the value chain of the solution. Here are some of the key
topics that shouldn’t be underestimated.
Look beyond technological complexity
Technology is only the means to an end – not the goal itself.
As an example, an in-house IT team that was a customer of
mine decided to set up a big data platform without consulting
the business. They focused so much on the technical aspects
they forgot why it was meant to be there in the first place.
When they’d finished they presented their shiny new platform
to the business, which didn’t understand what to do with it
or what value it could bring to them. Therefore, the project
didn’t get the funding to go further and was aborted.
