Sudlows and Interserve create sustainable collaboration
It is well known that data centres are under pressure to improve their sustainability . While no one disagrees , the know-how and ability required to achieve it are in short supply and typically reside in specific , unconnected disciplines . Inspired by this challenge , two companies , each an expert in its respective field have been working to form a new collaborative partnership , which is designed to improve data centre sustainability and to provide their clients with the right services from the outset .
Assembling the combined talents of Interserve , a wellestablished construction company with strong sustainability credentials and Sudlows , a leader in critical infrastructure , enterprise services and facilities management , they offer access to sector-specific expertise at the earliest stages of projects and support improved sustainability in these power-hungry facilities .
For some companies there is encouragement to reduce carbon emissions with benefits from the Carbon Reduction Commitment Scheme . Data centre carbon emissions are huge when compared to other corporate spaces and environmental improvement in the data centres can significantly improve the overall carbon footprint of a company , as well as produce significant cost savings .
As well as improved Corporate Social Responsibility , lower running costs in both existing and planned data centres are in possible . Combining a customers knowledge and experience with the skills of the architects and M & E consultants , this new collaboration can from any early stage introduce the latest innovations and techniques to improve critical power , control and monitoring , and cooling with partnership governed by the BS11000 ( Collaborative Business Relationships ) standard . n
Wideband Multi-Mode data centre ’ s
Brand-Rex has said it will launch a new 100 / 128 Gigabit / s Wideband Multi-Mode Fibre Solution designed specifically for data centres , adding that it requires only two fibres per link compared to the 20-fibre and 8-fibre solutions currently available .
Making the announcement at Data Centre World in London , Brand-Rex product manager Richard Budd said that , “ Wideband Multi-Mode Fibre is a complete game-changer for fibre networking in the data centre . For the first time it will be possible to carry four separate data channels along each fibre . This makes the Brand-Rex Wideband Multi-Mode Fibre solution ideal for future 100Gb / s Ethernet and 128Gb / s Fibre Channel applications , maintaining industry preferred LC duplex connectivity . Furthermore , this technology establishes a sensible building block from which 400Gb / s speeds can be achieved using our market leading MTP connectivity set .”
ISO / IEC , the international standards organisation , is anticipated to commence work on the international standard very soon . Exactly what “ OM ” nomenclature this new fibre will adopt is still up for debate . n
Banking on loads
Data centre services company HeatLoad has increased its rental stock of 3.5kW rack mounted load banks to over 600 units . The company says that it now has 8.6MW of rack mounted load banks and 8MW of floor standing load banks , adding that they believe this to be the largest stock holding in the UK . Dave Wolfenden , Managing Director at HeatLoad says , “ The company has seen an explosion in data centre testing this year , which has increased by fifty per cent in the first quarter of 2016 . We are not entirely sure whether this is due to the company name change towards the end of last year ( from Mafi Mushkila ), market growth , or an upturn in the economy , but 2016 is already looking to be a very successful year for us .”
Increasingly , the importance of testing data centre infrastructure prior to going live is widely acknowledged as critical in ensuring that optimal performance is achieved . HeatLoad load banks mimic the electrical and other performance characteristics of the IT equipment as closely as possible , using specialist heat load , load banks and server emulators . n
Improving Storage Analytics
Virtual Instruments has unveiled a free storage workload analysis service , WorkloadCentral . Already known for infrastructure performance analytics , the service , currently in beta , and the underlying community will help IT teams to better understand application workload interaction and their underlying storage infrastructure .
WorkloadCentral adds critical insight into application workload performance profiles and will helping storage professionals understand , benchmark and analyse their storage infrastructure , producing better performance and deployment decisions .
Registered users will be able to import workload metadata from storage arrays and begin analysing production workload data . From here they can build and share workload models across a global community and within the Workload Library .
Following their merger with Load DynamiX the company says , “ Its committed to providing comprehensive end-to-end infrastructure performance analytics .” n www . networkseuropemagazine . com
