Record breaking US-Europe takeovers as EU considers tougher scrutiny of deals
Solarflare debuts OCP software defined networking interface card
Solarflare is releasing an Open Compute Platform ( OCP ) softwaredefined , networking interface card , offering the industry ’ s most scalable , lowest latency networking solution to meet the dynamic needs of the enterprise environment . The SFN8722 OCP offers 10GbE performance , which is critical for today ’ s data centres where ultra scale dominates the market , supports 1000s virtual NICs and dual 10 GbE ports , and provides up to 30 million of packets per second and ultra-low latency under one microsecond . In addition , this is the industry ’ s first universal kernel bypass ( UKB ) solution which includes three techniques for kernel bypass : a POSIX ( Portable Operating System Interface ) sockets-based API ( Application Program Interface ), TCP ( Transmission Control Protocol ) Direct and DPDK ( Data Plane Development Kit ). Combined these kernel bypass methods offer support for more applications than any other method currently available . This allows organisations the flexibility to develop and implement applications without having to modify their applications or networks . Solarflare ’ s OCP NIC is a comprehensive 10GbE solution for ultra-scale environments requiring low latency , enhanced small packet performance , telemetry and security .
The Flareon Ultra SFN8722 Server Adapter is a special form factor NIC , designed specifically to the OCP 2.0 specification , with the addition of NC-SI ( Network Controller Sideband Interface ) manageability . The SFN8722 is an extension of Solarflare ’ s family of Software Defined NICs , the Flareon Ultra SFN8000 . This family of high performance Ethernet adapters has been designed for modern data centres that require scalability and performance .
These adapters enable the capability to scale out to thousands of containers per server for increased flexibility and performance , and are suitable for many market segments that require extreme scale for mission critical applications . These include leading edge cloud service providers , Web 2.0 companies , content delivery networks ( CDNs ), hosting companies , stock exchanges and other capital market institutions , as well as banks . n
American takeovers of European companies are on track to break records in 2017 . Thomson Reuters reports that the $ 50.1bn (£ 41.2bn ) total value of deals so far this year is the highest since records began in 1990 . Yet the European Union is now considering measures enabling it to scrutinise investments in the continent ’ s strategic industries , which include the cutting-edge technologies being developed in Europe ’ s tech sector .
Gianpiero Lotito , founder with Mariuccia Teroni and CEO of human language search company FacilityLive , and co-founder of the European Tech Alliance , commented : “ Europe is good at tech . The sector is contributing enormously to the economy both in terms of driving investment and creating highly skilled jobs . We must fight for a route to global success that doesn ’ t rely on international takeovers .
“ It ’ s unlikely that Europe will ever have a single destination to rival Silicon Valley , but it can support globally competitive technology businesses through its own unique network of many small valleys . These smaller ecosystems can provide the conditions for collaboration across different disciplines , which is so vital to innovation and growth .” n
Cyient supports GIGAWorld broadband rollout
Cyient has been selected by Liberty Global , the world ’ s largest international cable TV and broadband company , to support its new GIGAWorld initiative to bring Gigabit broadband speeds to its operations in Europe .
Announced last November , Liberty Global ’ s GIGAWorld initiative seeks to bring broadband speeds of one gigabit and more to tens of millions of households across Europe . Around 50 million homes in Europe have access to Liberty Global ’ s fibre-based ' GIGAReady ' networks today . Liberty Global expects that millions more will be connected over the coming years .
With capabilities in delivering FTTP ( fibre-to-the-premise ) and HFC ( hybrid-fibre coaxial ) planning and design services , Cyient will support Liberty Global in its goal for faster provisioning of nextgeneration broadband services to existing and new customers .
