available, with copper looms manufactured in 6 and 12
cable looms giving even more concentration in a smaller
rack space.
Another addition can be employed; an out of rack
patching enclosure mounted above each rack. Again, it’s
all about flexibility with all connections outside of the
rack, cables looms can be installed before the rack arrives.
Adding and moving cable looms becomes a less risky
operation.
MTP/MPO fibre is now commonplace pre-terminated,
again this has allowed maximum connections in a smaller
form patch frame 96 cores in 1U with the ability to break
out via interface cassettes, just by swapping out cassettes
there’s future-proofing which could reach up to 400Gps.
By their nature data centres are highly secure, they
need the cabling installed as quickly and safely as possible
with minimal disruption and mess. There’s still an element
of on-site testing required by the loom manufacturers –
normally two tests per cable loom – to ensure the looms
have been installed correctly with no undue twists or
kinks. Also to check that there’s no undue stress on the
termination cassettes leading to cores becoming dislodged;
this testing is required for the fibre terminations for the
same reasons. Pre-terminated cable looms can be moved
with no mess or disruption and re-used, older fixed systems
have to be cut out and removed. n
