18 NETWORKING Driving the transition By Richard Jonker, Vice President of SMB, NETGEAR www.netgear.com The Internet of Things is the catalyst for the move to 10G LAN Today we’re witnessing an array of devices that previously existed in isolation, being connected to networks as part of the Internet of Things (IoT). The demand and strain these connected devices are putting on existing networks is something businesses can’t shy away from; they must embrace new technologies and make the move to 10 Gigabit (10G) local area network (LAN) connectivity. The IoT is making its mark throughout the business landscape – it’s a tech transformation that will bring numerous opportunities for both small- and medium-sized businesses. And although the IoT may be more familiar to larger organisations, it will eventually touch and permeate throughout the whole of the supply chain, of which SMBs are a major contributor. This is an historic transition in which a rising network of physical objects will be communicating via the Internet, talking to each other as well as with their external environments. It has been predicted, and regularly discussed, that there will be 26 billion connected devices being used across the globe by 2020.
