Mobile Networks could Benefit from Brexit
Economics and financial consultancy Oxera , estimates that UK mobile phone operators could benefit by up to £ 250million p . a . as a result of Brexit , at the expense of UK consumers . This is simply because once the country has left the EU , operators will no longer subject to existing EU price controls on roaming . As a result , by 2018 , Brexit may be worth up to £ 750million p . a . more than a remain scenario would have been . However , this would be largely at the expense of UK mobile phone users , who could end up pay considerably more for roaming in the future .
UK operators faced losing up to £ 500million a year if the UK remained in the EU due to new legislation . This new regulations will prevent operators from charging consumers any roaming fees , as well as potentially reducing the wholesale fees that operators can charge each other for providing roaming services to subscribers from other countries . The removal of roaming charges is being introduced in 2017 under an EU regulation that ’ s binding on all member states . We ’ ll only know the full extent , if any , of these new regulations once the UK has renegotiated its relationship with the European Union . n
