Cambridge City Council replaces 5.8GHz wireless
links with Siklu millimetre wave technology
Siklu has announced that it has been selected by the Cambridge City Council to
provide wireless connectivity for the city’s CCTV surveillance system.
The Siklu EtherHaul radios deployed in Cambridge city centre replace the 5.8GHz
wireless technology previously used by the city for its CCTV network.
Ron Johnson, the owner of Videcom Security, which installed the Siklu radios in
Cambridge, said: ‘Siklu’s millimetre wave technology eliminated the camera latency
issues that the previous wireless infrastructure presented.
‘The CCTV network in the city centre is now so robust that we have been able
to install additional cameras in the area for more comprehensive security coverage
without sacrificing fibre-like network speed, reliability and stability.’
The public CCTV system shared by Cambridge and several other towns in the
district monitors 254 cameras total, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Mr Johnson said: ‘Unlike legacy wireless networks whose wide beams can be
vulnerable to interception, the Siklu radios deployed in Cambridge’s
CCTV system use ultra-narrow beams in the 60GHz millimetre wave
spectrum to transmit information across the network securely,
making the radios inherently secure from interceptions and
hacking. As a result, sensitive information can be transmitted
across the network securely.’
Eyal Assa, Siklu’s chief executive, added: ‘As
technology advances and physical security requires
more and more security and reliable network
bandwidth, Siklu can offer cities like Cambridge
the infrastructure needed to keep city centres and
other areas safe.’

Boundless Networks, a UK-based
wireless Internet Service Provider,
has upgraded its installed base
equipment to Cambium Networks’
ePMP Elevate solution, replacing
more than 300 of its 550 access
points.
This, the company said,
doubled the available capacity
at each base station, enabling
new subscribers to be added and
Boundless’ service portfolio to be
expanded with a 50Mbps product.

Mr Burns said that Boundless
carried out a measured testing and
evaluation process, taking before
and after measurements to verify
the impact and per forming random
service and speed checks to test
customer experience.
He added: ‘As a result of the
upgrade, our customers are getting
more consistent service delivery,
making streaming and Voice-over-
IP (VoIP) far more realistic.
‘We can bring speeds to rural
locations that are better than
the UK average speeds in large
cities, making our proposition more
compelling than ever. All in all, we
have been delighted to see that
Cambium’s claims are true and we
have seen no ‘down-side’ to this
migration so far.’
