State of the Network global survey finds two thirds of enterprises have deployed SDN

Viavi Solutions has released the results of its ninth annual State of the Network global study today . Based on insight gathered from 740 CIOs , IT directors , and network engineers around the world , enterprises have significantly accelerated their adoption of next generation infrastructure technologies , driven by skyrocketing bandwidth requirements . Fifty-four per cent of respondents expect bandwidth requirements to grow by half in 2016 , and 48 per cent expect them to double by the end of 2017 . Enterprises are significantly increasing deployment of 100 Gigabit Ethernet ( 100GbE ), public and private cloud , and software defined networking ( SDN ). The study is now available for download .
‘ Data networks of all types , around the globe , are being strained by an explosion of traffic , from bandwidth hungry video today to the Internet of Things tomorrow ,’ said Oleg Khaykin , president and chief executive officer , Viavi Solutions . ‘ As our State of the Network study shows , IT teams are responding by moving faster to implement emerging technologies , giving them the cost effective scalability and flexibility they need . Of course there will be ensuing challenges , from the unique installation and maintenance requirements of 100GbE , to the loss of performance monitoring capabilities for networks spread across physical , virtual and cloud segments .’

Research suggests energy efficiency objectives require clearer definitions

New research from The Green Grid has found that despite nine in 10 IT leaders acknowledging the importance of data centres in contributing to corporate social responsibility ( CSR ) achievement , nearly half of organisations do not define energy efficiency – reducing the ability to analyse how data centres can impact overall CSR strategy .
Roel Castelein , EMEA marketing chair , said , ‘ Whilst organisations are always looking to maximise their CSR , by not implementing clear definitions of what constitutes energy efficiency , many IT leaders are failing to tap into the contribution that data centres could provide to achieve these results . This lack of definition also makes it difficult for organisations to measure and monitor how the data centres could be improved over time to become greener .’
In addition to these findings , the research identified virtualisation as the most common energy efficient strategy , with 42 per cent of respondents adopting this method . Virtualisation has become a popular option for organisations recently , as they continue to benefit from the lower number of physical servers – especially those running for prolonged periods of time – reducing the overall energy required to power and cool them .
The Green Grid conducted the research in October 2015 . The survey studied responses from 150 IT decision makers at end user organisations , including companies who run their own data centres as well as colocation data centre providers , from across the UK , France , and Germany on data centre resource efficiency .
