Sagrada Familia
PROJECT FOCUS
Keep it in the Familia
The IT team at the world famous Sagrada Familia recently took the decision to invest in a new data
centre in order to help with the management of the ongoing construction project. The team wanted an
on site facility but were hampered by the daily building work so turned to Schneider Electric to provide
a prefabricated solution containing pre-installed racks, containment, power, cooling, security and
management systems. Michael Crane finds out more.
S
agrada Familia – a UNESCO
world heritage site and
Catholic church in Barcelona
– continues a long history
of transformation through
an extensive, ongoing
construction project.
The site
Construction of Sagrada Família
began in 1882 and celebrated Spanish
architect Gaudí became involved shortly
afterwards, transforming its design with
his distinctive Gothic and curvilinear
Art Nouveau style. He devoted many
years of his life to the Sagrada Familia
but when he died in 1926 less than a
quarter of the ambitious project had
been completed.
Throughout history Sagrada Família’s
construction has been dogged by
hold ups and delays. Initially relying on
private donations, the project was halted
by the Spanish Civil War, only to resume
intermittent progress in the 1950s.
