Significant work has also been undertaken by the Network on the topic of ethical considerations in the use of artificial intelligence in the judiciary in terms of research and the drafting of a discussion guide and a guidelines document on the topic . Expert consultations with the participants of the Global Judicial Integrity Network are planned for 2021 . This work focuses on integrity challenges in the development phase as well as in the implementation phase of the use of artificial intelligence , and also aims to address some specific themes , such as access to justice , transparency , data privacy , discretion of judges , accountability and liability questions .
To respond to the ongoing pandemic and the new challenges that have arisen in light of it , a survey was launched by the Network in June 2020 on measures adopted by judiciaries to adjust their operations in response to the pandemic . Participants were invited to share their feedback on a range of measures which may affect the integrity and transparency of the judiciary , such as transitioning to videoconference-based hearings , prioritizing cases or ensuring the physical safety and health of court users , judges and court staff . The outcomes of the survey are published on the Network ’ s website .

As part of the overall work on the topic of the use of artificial intelligence and with a view to furthering its scope , UNODC , in its capacity as the secretariat of the Network , submitted a project proposal on global recommendations to prevent gender discrimination and biases in artificial intelligence systems applied by judiciaries at the 2020 AI for Good Global Summit , which was organized by the International Telecommunication Union and XPRIZE Foundation . The proposal was one of the winners in the Gender Equity Breakthrough Track . The planned outcome of the project will be specialized guidelines on gender-related considerations in the development of artificial intelligence systems in the judiciary , and will complement the overall work of the Network on the use of artificial intelligence .
