Having just gotten done trailbossing a NETRA enduro, I thought I’d take this chance to download a little. Lots of folks have been excellent enduro trailbosses and there’s a lot to know and learn every time you do one. I think that this was probably my 6th time doing it and I’m definitely still learning. A few days after the event, it occurred to me that putting on an enduro is like building a big machine with tons of inter- connected, inter-dependent parts and until the event is complete, you’re never 100% sure if it’s going to work great or throw a rod and spill its innards all over the ground.
The Conceptual Phase
The conceptual phase is probably the most-fun part of doing the event. You get to use your imagination. What trail is available to me? What would make the ride fun? What time-keeping do I want to require? How can I reward the riders who know the rule book? What’s the right level of challenge for A riders? How can I not kill the C riders? Is there room enough to park cars, campers, trailers? Is there a way to route the C riders around the super-tough trail while still giving them a fun ride?
