G ROWING UP, SUSAN TROY WOULD WATCH HER MOTHER sew clothing, or paint on canvas, initiating her love for art and fashion. She went from sewing her own Barbie clothes to producing prom dresses and quilts before ultimately learning how to dye fabric. In 2005, the North Smithfield resident earned her BFA in textile design / fiber arts at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, then studied fashion at the School of Fashion Design in Boston in 2011. After participating in some StyleWeek fashion shows in Providence, designing and sewing wedding attire for her children’ s weddings and attending a class taught by local surface designer Dawn Oliveira, Troy finally tried her hand at painting fabric.
By 2020, Troy was selling hand-painted decorative linen pillows, napkins, towels and other home goods with abstract prints and patterns. She also screen prints cotton towels with patterns inspired by her own nature photography, such as a popular towel design featuring a chair in a field of tall grass. Every product presents its own unique color characteristics, and no fabric goes to waste as scraps are turned into lavender sachets to fill a room with serenity, and tree ornaments for the holidays.
