Changing National Discourse
Climate change seems like a polarized
issue, but there’s evidence that more
people are concerned than not concerned, and that
people’s discomfort in talking about climate change
is amplifying the polarized perception. During this
panel discussion engage with members of the National
Network for Ocean and Climate Change Interpretation
who are working in red states to increase
conversation. They will share their experiences
encouraging civic action with their visitors and our
impact on national discourse.

Engaging Community Programs and How to
Create Them
Community engagement is an important way
for museums and historic sites to build support,
audiences, and confront contemporary issues. But not
all organizations have the skills to launch and sustain
an effective community project. We will explore
approaches – Haymarket in Boston, James Madison’s
Montpelier, Virginia, and Caribbean Connections
in Salem - to discover how to successfully engage
different audiences in the community. You will create
a set of practical steps
(shared online) to help you
engage effectively with your
community.

It’s Never Too Late! Collections Management on
a Shoestring at the The House of Seven Gables
Two museum professionals worked on a short project
to assess and improve collections in storage and
on exhibition. In doing so they faced inadequate
storage, disorganized and missing information, and,
challengingly, major budget constraints. This session is
meant to demonstrate how this and similar collections
can be documented, rehoused, and stabilized on a
shoe-string budget. We will discuss our solutions
and show you how to approach your own collections
management projects on a limited budget.

It’s Time We All Got a Raise: Considering a New
Paradigm for Museum Compensation
This presentation challenges the paradigm of
compensation decisions that use low salaries to
balance the budget. Research presented will support
an alternate paradigm of compensation policies
designed to attract and retain the best employees to
yield the best programming and visitor experience,
while at the same time meeting mission and revenue
goals. Equitable pay is therefore and ultimately, the
path towards any museum’s success. The session will
aim to turn discussion into an action strategy.
