2. Pain Management Many NDIS participants experience chronic pain or discomfort as a result of their disabilities. Physiotherapists have specialised knowledge in managing pain through non-invasive methods such as manual therapy, dry needling, joint mobilisations, and prescribing mobility exercises. Physiotherapists also teach participants self-management techniques, such as posture correction, rehabilitation exercises, and joint protection strategies, to help reduce pain and prevent future injuries.
3. Physical Rehabilitation and Therapy A key area where physiotherapists contribute is through the rehabilitation of physical function. This includes a variety of therapeutic techniques such as manual therapy, strength conditioning training, mobility & balance exercises, and cardiovascular conditioning. Physiotherapists develop customised exercise programs that help individuals regain mobility, build strength, and improve endurance. For example, a participant recovering from a stroke may need exercises designed to improve muscle strength, coordination, and balance. For participants with degenerative conditions like multiple sclerosis or Parkinsons disease, physiotherapists provide ongoing rehabilitation to slow the progression of the disease and manage symptoms. They may also assist with techniques to improve posture, reduce fatigue, and prevent falls.
4. Improving Mobility and Independence Mobility is a central focus in the treatment plans of many NDIS participants. Physiotherapists work to improve functional independence by teaching individuals how to use mobility aids effectively. Whether it’ s crutches, walkers, wheelchairs, or prosthetics, physiotherapists ensure that participants can move more freely and safely in their environment.
In addition to mobility aids, physiotherapists assist participants in adapting to their surroundings. This could include recommending modifications to the home or providing advice on how to navigate different environments with ease. For example, a physiotherapist might suggest strategies for someone with a disability to navigate stairs or get in and out of vehicles, thereby enhancing their ability to live independently.
