HOPE FOR THE FUTURE At the surprise announcement , third-year VU business student Kaitlyn Velazquez also shared what the Arvielo ’ s recognition personally means to her . “ As a Latina pursuing a career in business , it is so inspiring to be able to feel represented by someone who has made a name for herself in the pathway [ of business that ] I have always dreamed of . Knowing how much my parents sacrificed in order to best set me up for success , and seeing everything that Mrs . Arvielo has accomplished , gives me even more hope for my future in this field .”
Carmen ’ s work ethic was the spark that lit the flame for Patty ’ s success .
“ She ’ s the best ,” stated Carmen . “ She was a go-getter from the start , and she ’ s never given up . She had tough times in her career and in business , but she didn ’ t quit . She ’ s the hardest working person I know . She just won ’ t quit on anything . She ’ s very loving and respectful to me , very giving and generous with mom and the whole family .”
The establishment of the Patty Arvielo School of Business and Management comes as the business program celebrates its 50th anniversary . With degree programs in accounting , business administration , management and marketing , business has remained the highest enrolled academic program at VU for the past few decades .
The new Patty Arvielo School of Business will officially launch in the 2024-2025 academic year and will serve undergraduate and graduate residential , distance and non-traditional students in business , communication , organizational psychology and people operations .
The establishment of the Patty Arvielo School of Business and Management marks a significant milestone for Hispanic women nationally , as it is the first school of business in the United States to be named after a Latina .

• Funding to maintain and enhance vital programs and services while maintaining and improving public assets such as beaches , streets , parks , and water and wastewater systems .
• About $ 1.7 million for an additional ambulance unit and six firefighter paramedics to meet the higher community need for emergency medical services .
• An additional $ 500,000 in funding for homeless services , most of which will fund additional shelter beds .
• A continuation of the City ’ s aggressive pension paydown strategy , with the goal of eliminating pension liability in 2032 . Elimination of this debt will help the City ’ s long-term fiscal sustainability .
NBPD DETECTIVE HONORED Newport Beach Detective Cynthia Carter was one of 20 first responders in Orange County honored by the Trauma Intervention Program of O . C . at its “ Heroes with Heart ” awards ceremony at the Irvine Marriott on April 27 .
Carter was recognized by the nonprofit organization for “ her works of compassion amid crisis ” as the Newport Beach Police Department ’ s former homeless liaison officer .
The ceremony recognized Carter for her three years of work as the City ’ s homeless liaison officer , during which time she helped about 50 people transition from life on the street to permanent housing , and helped guide many others toward successful drug and mental health counseling , shelter and other support services .
Carter credits the support of her department and collaboration with TIP of O . C , the Orange County Health Care Agency , City Net and Be Well OC , and many other service organizations . She has kept in touch with many people she helped over the years and said she plans to continue to do so following her promotion from homeless liaison officer to detective in April .
FIELD OF HONOR TRIBUTE AT CASTAWAYS PARK The Field of Honor , now in its 14th year , is being presented by the Exchange Club of Newport Harbor in recognition of Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day and in honor of our country ’ s servicemembers and first responders .
The event runs from May 19 through May 29 at Castaways Park , 700 Dover Dr . There will be an Armed Forces Day recognition on May 20 , a student program for Newport-Mesa 5th graders on May 26 , and a Memorial Day ceremony on May 29 ( Memorial Day ).
Along the pathways of Castaways Park , 1776 large American flags greet visitors . The public is invited and encouraged to dedicate one or more of the Field of Honor flags to a servicemember and / or to a first responder . Each dedicated flag carries a ribbon with the name of the individual to whom the flag is dedicated . There are also photos of those individuals along with narratives on many of the dedicated flags .
The Field of Honor is open to the public at no cost from 9 a . m . to 5 p . m . daily . The event benefits the 1:1 ( First Battalion , First Marines ) Foundation , to assist Camp Pendleton Marines and their families . For more information , visit exchangeclubofnewportharbor . com / field-of-honor .
OPENING OF JUNIOR LIFEGUARD BUILDING DELAYED UNTIL 2024 The opening of the highly anticipated Junior Lifeguard Building will be delayed by several months after City project managers determined that the building ’ s concrete walls do not meet specifications established in the construction contract . Additional time is needed to rectify the issues .
Originally set for a Memorial Day weekend grand opening , the Junior Lifeguard Building is now expected to be completed by early 2024 and operational for next year ’ s summer program . For safety reasons , all construction activity will be halted during the upcoming busy summer months .
The facility , located near the base of the Balboa Pier , is being funded through a partnership between the City and the Newport Beach Junior Lifeguard Foundation . City officials and Foundation leaders expressed disappointment over the construction delay , but emphasized Newport Beach ’ s commitment to providing a well-constructed facility on behalf of residents and private donors to the Junior Lifeguard Foundation .
CITY DROUGHT CAMPAIGN WINS STATEWIDE AWARDS The City of Newport Beach ’ s 2022 water conservation education campaign , “ Ride the Wave to Water Savings ,” was recognized with two awards at the California Association of Public Information Officials ( CAPIO ) annual awards program on May 3 .
The City ’ s work was recognized with first place “ EPIC ” awards in two categories , overall campaign and graphic design . Judges noted the eye-catching visual appeal of the campaign ’ s “ retro beach ” theme , as well as its messaging effectiveness in helping reduce water consumption by 12 percent citywide during some of the driest months of the state ’ s extended drought .
CAPIO ’ s EPIC awards program recognizes creative and effective efforts in the areas of communication and marketing campaigns , newsletter production , photography , special events , writing , web development , video production and more .
