Visit Newport Beach Unveils New Leisure Campaigns to Lure Visitors
Scene from the Visit Newport Beach winter leisure campaign video
By Christopher Trela | NB Indy “ Choose seas over skis .” “ Choose boats over coats .” “ Choose tan lines over lift lines .” Those are the catch phrases being used by Visit Newport Beach – the city ’ s visitors bureau – in its new Winter Leisure Campaign designed to lure visitors to our idyllic seaside destination instead of the crowded ski resorts .
Given the abundance of snow on local mountains from recent storms , Visit Newport Beach has its work cut out for them , but they ’ re up for the challenge .
The new campaign that debuted this month is dubbed “ Stay at Sea Level .” The digital marketing campaign offers nautical inspirations for visitors who hope to hibernate at a seaside resort or enjoy a different type of ski experience ( think jet ski ) on the water .
According to Visit Newport Beach President and CEO Gary Sherwin , the Stay at Sea Level campaign is “ a call for visitors to choose the sea over the slopes this season and reimagine their definition of the perfect winter getaway . Newport Beach is the ideal refuge for a winter warm-up . From boundless stretches of shore to decadent comfort food that will warm the soul , our campaign shines a light on all the ways Newport Beach will surprise and delight visitors during a winter getaway .”
The “ Stay at Sea Level ” campaign runs through March 31 , and has three versions using language that reframes winter vacations from the mountains to the sea : “ Choose Boats Over Coats ,” “ Choose Seas Over Skis ” and “ Choose

Newport Beach City Manager Update : Rainstorm Cleanup , City Projects for 2023
Grace Leung , Newport Beach City Manager
By Grace Leung , Newport Beach City Manager
I ’ d like to recognize critical , often unsung members of our City team who perform a vital service during rainstorms : the Utilities Department crews that pump storm water and operate the tide valves on Balboa Island and the Peninsula .
The valves , which were built in the 1970s to replace a system from the early 1900s , are necessary to prevent flooding in lowlying areas . They are manually operated , and need to be closed during high tides to prevent seawater from flooding the streets . Once the tide recedes , crews reopen the valves -- nearly 90 in total -- to allow water to flow from streets to the bay .
When high tides require the valves to be closed during a rainfall , the storm water cannot drain and must be pumped manually . In anticipation , as many as 30 Utilities team members , along with assistance from Public Works , mobilize with trucks and pumps . All of the pumps are tested , fueled , cleaned and ready to go before every rain event . In the past several weeks , the team has deployed as early as 3 a . m ., including weekends and Christmas Day ( yes , Christmas Day ), to pump water from the drains and streets .
The City is developing a modern floodcontrol system for Balboa Island that will

NB POLICE DEPARTMENT UPDATES : MOBILE CAFÉ , SECRET SANTA
Compiled by NB Indy Staff
On Saturday , Feb . 4 , 2023 , from 9 to 11 a . m ., the Newport Beach Police Department will host the next NBPD Mobile Café , allowing community members to come together in an informal space to discuss community issues and build relationships .
The majority of contacts law enforcement has with the public happen during emergencies or emotional situations . Unfortunately , those situations are not always the most effective times for relationship-building with the community .
The Newport Beach Police Department Mobile Café allows for relaxed , one-on-one interaction and a unique opportunity for community members to learn more about the Department ’ s work . This is a comfortable setting for asking questions , bringing concerns , or simply getting to know our officers , as these interactions are the foundation of community partnerships .
This event will be hosted at Newport Coffee Company which is located at 104 McFadden Place . Please join us for coffee , pastries and conversation . We hope to see you there !
Any questions can be directed to Sergeant Steve Oberon at soberon @ nbpd . org .
