NEW Biomedical class offered at NBHS thanks

to $15,000 grant

The NBHS Science department, along with Curriculum Director Amber White, sat down last year and began grant writing for Project Lead The Way Biomedical Science class. NBHS is one of three schools in Michigan to receive the $15,000 grant to teach students to explore concepts of biology and medicine to determine factors that led to the death of a fictional person. While investigating the case, students examine autopsy reports, investigate medical history, and explore medical treatments that might have prolonged the person's life. The activities and projects introduce students to human physiology, basic biology, medicine, and research processes while allowing them to design their own experiments to solve problems.

Currently the class is offered to 11th and 12th graders. Mrs. Maryanne McMurtry is the teacher of this class and has gone the extra mile to make their first experience one they will remember! For evidence McMurtry made simulated vomit and blood spatter, as well as other "life like" props for the the "scene" her students would evaluate and analyze. Pictured above "NBHS CSI" is underway for the first time! A volunteer adult poses for 45 minutes as the fictional person found "dead." Be sure to check in each month as we follow the progress of the class and hear from students!
