GETTING LOCAL MEDIA COVERAGE OF YOUR FAMS

HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO GET THE MEDIA TO PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR FAM EXPERIENCE !

When you go on a FAM , you become an expert in a certain destination , property or supplier . FAMs are not only great for positioning yourself to clients , but also to future clients by way of your local media .

Let ’ s start with being careful using the word FAM to someone outside of travel . It ’ s an industry term and the average reporter might think you mean family travel . Make sure to explain what a FAM is . For instance , you might say “ I recently returned from a FAM , or familiarization trip , to Greece . I was hosted by Greek tourism authorities and suppliers to learn more about Greek cuisine and culture on several islands .”
Always think like a reporter . The truth is that a FAM trip in and of itself is not very interesting to media . It ’ s time to get in their heads and think why would their readers , listeners or viewers want to know about this ? An angle about all the different types of all-inclusives in Mexico from an expert who was just there , or river cruising tips for first-timers are much more likely to get a second look .
A picture is worth a thousand words . Many smaller publications would love to have your high-quality photos from the trip . Remember to provide high- resolution , clear photos that accurately represent the destination . Offer photos with and without people — and make sure everyone in the photo has given permission for it to be used .
For small publications , this is a great time to pitch yourself as a travel writer . As a travel advisor who regularly gets “ behind the scenes ” looks at places via FAMs and your other travels , you ’ d be a great columnist . If you enjoy writing , this can be a way to share your experiences and gain some new clients from loyal readers .
FAMs are also rich sources of content for social media . Make sure that you are posting about your trips so you can direct reporters to your social platforms to see more .
As you familiarize yourself with a destination , resort property or new cruise ship make sure to use that FAM to familiarize your expertise with your local media .
