NAVIGATING PF What Is Pulmonary Fibrosis? There are different ways in which the lungs can get scarred – some known, some unknown. But scarring causes lung tissue to thicken and stiffen. As a result: • • It is more difficult for lungs to expand (get larger) and take in air when breathing. It is difficult for oxygen to get from the lungs into the bloodstream and circulate to tissues and organs in the body. As the lungs become more scarred, patients experience more shortness of breath, especially with activity. 6
