How Is Pulmonary Fibrosis Treated? Knowing the cause of a patient’s PF is very important for developing an effective treatment plan. There are medicines that may be effective or at least partially effective treatments for IPF or other disorders that scar the lungs. Generally, treatments do one of two things: they either reduce the symptoms or they slow down progression of the disease. Treatments are not yet available that can reverse or even stop scarring of the lungs in patients with IPF. Much research is being done to find new medications that are effective for lung conditions, such as IPF or other types of PF in which scarring can’t be stopped with currently available therapies. 15
