NAVIGATING LUNG CANCER If the Worst Happens Living with cancer is hard. Be kind to yourself, accept offers of help, and try to stay positive. 28 It isn’t easy to talk about death. Most people with cancer, feel better when they do. Ask your healthcare team to describe different outcomes and options. Take time to think about what you want if your cancer continues to worsen even with treatment. It’s a good idea to talk about options with family and close friends and your health-care team if your cancer continues. It’s important for people with a serious illness, to find and ask someone to be a health-care agent, or “proxy.” If you can’t speak for yourself, this person has the legal responsibility to explain your wishes about health care. Your doctor, hospital, or a lawyer can help you find a health proxy.
