RIVER
River cruises tend to emphasize quality over quantity, and the amenities are simple but elevated. For example, there might be just one or two onboard restaurants, but they will serve highquality food and wine inspired by— or even directly sourced from— the regions you visit. Instead of a range of various room categories, river cruise ships offer fewer options, and it is not uncommon for all to be suites. Overall, the whole experience is more focused on the destination. Since you’ re rarely out of sight of land, ships are designed to maximize the view of passing castles, vineyards and villages. While oceans border cities, rivers pass through them, so you’ ll often dock right in the heart of town with shorter walking distances and easier exploration.
Itineraries include stops on iconic rivers, especially those in Europe, whose tiny villages otherwise see little tourism. Smaller ships make for a more relaxed experience where you won’ t feel lost in a large group. →
