Cruise Ports Worth an Overnight

By Justin Gibson
Cruising is an idyllic way to explore the world: Unpack once, lounge in luxury between destinations, sample an array of mesmerizing locales. But some locales have a way of hooking you, of piquing your wanderlust, of making you say,“ Gosh, I wish we had another day here.” It’ s inevitable! Travel is innately romantic, and the urge to hang around in your new favorite city is not unlike the desire to bump into a high school crush. As professional travelers ourselves, we know these four ports are well worth an overnight stay in, and the top three reasons why.
Livorno, Italy
Livorno serves as the gateway to the Tuscan countryside, the harbor for a host of romantic scenes and escapades. Medicifunded, Renaissance-era fortifications infuse an idyllic charm into the modern cruise port, and it seeps into your jaunts through town: breezy strolls along canals of Venezia Nuova, exploring the bustling historic neighborhood of Quartiere Venezia or the chance to fortress-hop between Fortezza Vecchia and Fortezza Nuova. But! The real draw of Livorno as an overnight port lies just beyond the city itself: You’ re only a pleasant countryside drive away from the likes of Pisa and Florence— each of which harbors its own score of idyllic scenes and dreamy discoveries.
San Gimignano, Italy
TERRAZZA M A S C A G N I
It would be a literal shame to miss strolling this seaside promenade when overnighting in Livorno. The checker-tiled flooring is a hypnotically calming juxtaposition to the ceaseless lapping of the ocean’ s waves.
T H E L E A N I N G TOWER OF PISA
There’ s a quirky— yet affirming!— feeling of appreciating the imperfections of life that you get when you observe a nearly 1,000-year-old bell tower with a four-degree lean. You must take the photo where perspective makes it seem like you’ re holding it up.
MICHELANGELO’ S DAV I D
Calling the Galleria dell’ Accademia in Florence home, Michelangelo’ s David is on the short list for consideration as his crowning masterpiece. David himself may be a marble sculpture, but with the level of detail he has you’ d swear he was about to step off the pedestal and ask to borrow a fig leaf.
