Figure 5 . General locations of 24 subsurface groundwater monitoring wells on Kiawah Island
In addition to the terrestrial groundwater wells , three wells were deployed in freshwater wetlands and ponds to collect data on water levels . Open water level data will be compared with groundwater levels to determine the influence of open water levels on groundwater . Studying groundwater conditions and water budgets over a long-term period will provide valuable information vital to developing proactive approaches to mitigate vegetative die-back of major forest species , guiding policies regarding the island ’ s drainage infrastructure , promoting native landscape plantings , and siting of low impact development practices across the island ( e . g ., rain gardens , constructed wetlands , permeable walking surfaces ).
