Nothing Like a

First Sighting

Story and photographs by Robert Hill

We are blessed on Kiawah with an

abundance of wildlife , and like many of you , I have developed an intense interest in discovering its many forms . For me personally , this means jumping on my bike early in the morning and heading to various Island locations .
Whether it ’ s the beach , Ocean Park , The Preserve , or locations in between , there ’ s something to see during all four seasons of the year . While I ’ m always happy to see our familiar friends such as great egrets and anhingas , what keeps me coming back for more are the rare sightings or the hope of seeing something for the first time . A rare occasion occurred for me this past August when I sighted and photographed a black-bellied whistling duck ( BBWD ) on consecutive days in two locations in the Preserve .
