Our Colorful Feathered Neighbors

By Aaron Given , Town of Kiawah Island Wildlife Biologist

Birds are undoubtedly one of

the most colorful groups of animals in the world . Sea slugs , in my opinion , are a close second . ( Trust me — do a Google Images search for photos of “ sea slugs ,” and you will be amazed by their beauty .) The perfectly placed colors and patterns on birds inspire a sense of wonder and awe from young to old . Seeing the colorful palette of a male painted bunting for the first time is a jaw-dropping experience . The blues , reds , and greens play off each other like a fine work of art . A male wood duck feeding on acorns in a secluded pond is a sight to behold . Each feather is perfectly placed , creating crisp black and white lines topped with a shimmering green and purple head .
