Getting a Handle on Ecological Health

“ Ecological health ” is a critical concept in the Kiawah Conservancy ’ s new strategic plan . Our revised Mission Statement sets the tone , introducing ecological health as the lens through which we view the Island :
MISSION 2030 : We measure , manage , improve , and advocate for the ecological health of Kiawah Island and its environs .

What is ecological health ? Ecological health refers to the integrity of an ecosystem and its ability to function effectively . This functioning is based on the balance of an ecosystem ’ s pieces , living and nonliving . Ecosystems are by nature complex ; the best contain significant biodiversity .
We have learned from both our own research and an accumulating body of science around the world that maintaining complex ecosystems and fostering biodiversity are essential to achieving ecological health . Assessments will provide a yardstick for measuring this . Information learned will facilitate our ability to manage and , when appropriate , to advocate for improvement .
As we near buildout , much of our rich , native habitat has been converted to lovely homes with carpets of grass and plantings that , while decorative , do not support our treasured native wildlife . This inevitably leads to fewer birds and butterflies . In an unfortunate double-whammy , these same landscaping changes alter the quality of stormwater runoff , further impacting wildlife .
Why is it important ? Here on Kiawah , we are fortunate to have experienced thoughtful development . From the beginning key stakeholders as well as property owners have appreciated the value of Kiawah ’ s natural state . To date , the Conservancy , with your support , has preserved 2,273 acres of critical habitat . We are in a much better position than most coastal communities . However , conserving properties is no longer enough .
