Seismic Testing:
The Sound and the Fury
W
Story by Pamela Buongiorno and Leigh Cobb
alking along the Kiawah beach trying to escape the cacophony
of my day—barking dogs, ringing telephones, television news
bickering—I often look at the rolling waves and imagine the
peace and quiet to be found below the ocean waves. Dolphin,
fish, and shark frolicking, chittering, and gliding just below the surface and into
the deep. It turns out I’m wrong. It’s very noisy. And there’s the possibility that it
could get much worse in the very near future.
