Living and Giving with the Kiawah Conservancy I f you want to know which people are part of the Kiawah Conservancy, just look in the mirror. The fact that you are holding this magazine in your hands means that you are a participant. We are residents and visitors who have recognized the importance of preserving and enhancing a beautiful barrier island. This is our obligation because we have the privilege of enjoying this special part of the world. This place does not belong to us—we are merely its custodians for the time being. We are the ones who must work to ensure that our children and their children will find the joy here that surrounds us today. There are so many ways to enrich our experience here on Kiawah: Learning to Appreciate The Conservancy presents a wide variety of informational, educational, and enjoyable programs throughout the year. Join us for Conservation Matters—a collection of special presentations and activities designed to educate and encourage active participation in the business of preserving and enhancing Kiawah. Choose from gardening lessons, wildlife research reports, and interactive events like kayaking and guided beach bird walks. Painted Bunting party in January offer opportunities for better understanding our mission and to meet the people working to make it a reality. Volunteering to Help Ensure the Successful Conservation of Kiawah’s Amazing Environment The Conservancy could not succeed without the aid of the army of volunteers who make it all happen. Our Garden Keepers maintain our Demonstration Garden throughout the year. Committees made up of dedicated residents focus on environmental science, communication and education, marketing and resource development, financial matters, habitat, planning and strategy, and special events. Finally, our newly organized Shorebird Stewardship Program will assist beachgoers in learning about our coastal birds. Donating to Support Conservation Contributions take many forms. In addition to the time spent volunteering, contributions can be made through donation of cash or property, employer matching, and estate planning. Perhaps you’d prefer to spend time in our Naturally Kiawah Demonstration Garden, where we feature demonstrations and displays of ways to make our properties wildlife-friendly. Or join us for any of our annual symposiums. This year on October 12 we will present The Shorebirds of Kiawah Island. Perhaps you’d like a place in the army! As always, we thank you for your help and support in whatever form it takes! NK Celebrating our Mutual Successes We love to join friends and neighbors for good times. Mornings in the Garden are great opportunities to meet like-minded neighbors while learning about landscaping with natural species.
