Let’ s Take a Walk

Story and photographs by Paul Roberts

Kiawah is a wonderful place to take a walk. There are paths where you can forget about traffic, forget about cars, even forget about houses. You can be alone with nature— surrounded by plants, ponds, marsh, and birds and by the occasional animal, scurrying to get out of the way.

My favorite place is Killdeer Pond in The Preserve, but that’ s mostly because it’ s close and easy for me to get to. Much of the time the pond is quiet in the morning when I like to walk— just one or two tri-colored herons or a couple of little green herons looking for a snack. But this day was special; I surprised a raccoon looking for what he could find under the walkway over the pond. I think he surprised me as much as I surprised him, but I did manage to get a photo.
