Kiawah, naturally …
I
have always thought of it in almost medical terms as the “Causeway Effect.” No matter how
long I have been “off Island”—whether for a quick trip to the box stores in West Ashley or a
month visiting family or traveling outside the United States—as soon as I round the bend on the
causeway and catch sight of the lush vegetation and peaceful marshes of Kiawah Island before
me, my pace slows, and I begin to relax.
It took this fast-talking Yankee a long time to adjust to life in South Carolina. I used to tap my foot
in line at the grocery store, wishing the easygoing cashier would just hurry up. No more. I find myself
moving through days on Kiawah at a more leisurely pace, taking the time to look at my surroundings.
Like most folks who find their way to Kiawah and return often or even eventually stay for good, I was
