Kiawah, Naturally...

ike many of you, I first came to Kiawah for a family vacation and was hooked immediately. From that time
on, any time one of us would ask, “Where should we go on vacation this year?” The answer was always a chorus of
“Kiawah, naturally!”
The theme for this issue of Naturally Kiawah – “Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow” – was a natural outgrowth
of the recent work done by the Kiawah Conservancy’s Environmental Science Committee under the incomparable
leadership of chairman Jack Kotz. The committee spent nearly two years reviewing the comprehensive environmental
inventory of the Island prepared by the Environmental Research Center in 1975 when the Kuwait Investment Company
purchased Kiawah. In keeping with the old cliché, “You can’t know where you’re going until you know where you’ve
been,” we expanded our look back to include Joan Avioli’s comprehensive history of the Kiawah Conservancy, Ʌ
