hompson Pass gets pummeled with snow. Lots of it. Through long Alaskan winters, the rugged terrain in the Chugach Mountains
sees more powder than anywhere else in the 49th State. Located near the small town of Valdez, the area’s steep terrain fostered the
extreme skiing revolution of the 1970s and ushered in the then-fringe craze of heli-skiing two decades later. The adventure world
took full notice of Thompson Pass’ big mountain opportunities in 1991 when the first World Extreme Skiing Championships brought some of
the sport’s elite to the remote region.
If the pass has one iconic constant beyond the blanket of falling flakes, it’s Tsaina Lodge. The once rustic outpost actually predates
the area’s adventure boom, first built in 1949 as a roadhouse for truckers to blow off steam during long hauls on dangerous backroads.
It evolved into a watering hole for local mountain folk and underground slope pioneers before becoming a centerpiece of the Alaska
freeskiing scene in the final decade of the last century.
Now Tsaina Lodge is preparing for another resurgence. Natural Retreats is preparing to introduce Tsaina as a premiere destination for
summer adventure in 2014. Recent renovations have turned the lodge into a luxury base for exploring the vast surrounding wilderness. With
an on-site helicopter pad and gourmet dining options, Tsaina is the perfect portal to an epic experience in the isolated beauty of Alaska.
